The Peel-Good Factor

Chemical peels are used to improve and smooth the texture of the skin. Liquids are brushed on to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells. These peels can be done at home or by a practitioner at a clinic. These procedures are intended to remove the outermost layers of the skin and improve the appearance of skin by reducing signs of ageing like fine lines, uneven skin tone, and age spots.    

There are three types of peels: superficial, medium, and deep   

At home peels are typically superficial – skin cells are chemically removed from the topmost layer of the skin. Whereas clinic-based peels are usually more intense as they remove skin cells from deeper layers of the skin resulting in longer lasting effects. Common at home includes peels include hydroxy acids – alpha, beta and poly. Alpha hydroxy acid is a small molecule which acts as a chemical exfoliator. PHAs have a higher molecular weight than AHAs and BHAs which allows them to attract moisture to the skin’s surface to prevent skin moisture loss during exfoliation. They are effective for restoring moisture to dehydrated skin.    

The peel chosen depends on skin type, PHAs are more suitable to sensitive skin because their large molecular weight makes them impenetrable to the skin, meaning their effect is limited to the surface of the skin, while BHAs are better suited to oily skin because it will penetrate to unclog pores.
