Getting Skin Ready for the Chill

The change in seasons from summer to winter is when skincare regimes are adjusted the most. The sudden temperature change can bring more damage to the skin than expected, which means that preventative care should begin well in advance. It’s safe to say that a summer skincare routine will not be beneficial to anyone in the cold winter climate, and so skincare routines will have to be altered according to the skin’s needs in winter. Changes to skincare routines can be made to help the skin recover from sun damage from the summer season or to prepare the skin for cooler weather.

What are ways to help the skin recover from sun damage?

While summer months are a blessing, excessive exposure to the sun can cause extreme sun damage to the skin. These damages may not be as visible during the summer months, but start becoming more apparent as tans fade and skin tones go back to normal. Some of the most effective treatments to help with sun damage are chemical peels. This treatment method exfoliates the outer layer of dead skin cells and clears clogged pores resulting in a smoother and more radiant complexion. Light chemical peels can be done at home to achieve glowing skin with little to no downtime. However, for skin that has suffered from severe sun damage, medium to deep depth peels are recommended. These are peels with Trichloroacetic Acids that are available in different concentrations (depending on the targeted concerns). Medium to deep depth peels can target skin issues such as sun damage, photodamage, acne scarring, and skin elasticity. These peels cannot be done at home and would need to be performed by a professional, with a recovery period of one to two weeks.

What can be done at home to improve skin for winter?

An effective skincare routine does not have to follow many steps as having too many steps can often cause more harm than good to the skin. One of the main components of any skincare routine is the cleanser. Investing in a good cleanser is essential to maintain clear and radiant skin throughout the year. The MZ Skin Cleanse & Clarify is a vegan-friendly cleanser containing a blend of AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and Papaya Fruit Enzymes that work to remove dead skin cells, boost cell renewal, and refine pores. The cleanser can be used twice daily to remove makeup and deeply clean the skin. It can also be used as a mask for deeper exfoliation to get rid of dead skin and damage caused by the summer season before winter truly begins.

Winter can often cause a feeling of dryness and dehydration in the skin. An effective way to combat this is through consistent use of hydrating sheet masks. Hydrating masks can be used alone or can be used to soothe the skin after exfoliation. The MZ Skin Hydra-Lift Facial Treatment Mask & Vitamin Infused Facial Treatment Mask can be used twice weekly to reduce pigmentation while hydrating and brightening the skin.

An essential skincare ingredient to incorporate into winter routines is Vitamin C. This is an antioxidant that reduces pigmentation and brown spots, boosts collagen production, and strengthens the skin barrier function. The MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum is a bestseller that is great to incorporate into routines to achieve a much more luminous skin tone during the winter season.
