Filler Complication Clinic: Reversal of Fillers

Filler dissolving is a treatment using an enzyme called Hylase or Hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid and can aid in the correction of complications and unsatisfactory results after filler injections. Hyaluronidase can be injected into the tissue or sometimes used topically by rubbing it into the skin. The reaction of a filler to hyaluronidase depends on the concentration and amount of hyaluronidase used as well as the specific properties of the hyaluronic acid.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

It is injected into the area that is to be treated. While there is no downtime, some mild bruising, redness, swelling, temporary tenderness and itching at the injection site may occur. These reactions are generally mild to moderate and usually resolve within a few days. Most allergic reactions to hyaluronidase are local hypersensitivity reactions; however, delayed hypersensitivity reactions may occur in larger concentrations of its use. A skin test can be done in non-urgent situations.

Depending on the type of hyaluronic acid filler used, results can be seen within minutes. We recommend waiting 72 hours for final results once swelling has resolved. There is more and more evidence demonstrating that hyaluronic acid fillers may last for more years than originally thought. The aim is to inject the appropriate amount of hyaluronidase to dissolve the unwanted filler.

Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results.

After the procedure, no makeup for 6-8 hours and no intensive exercise for 48 hours. Avoid blood thinning medications for 48 hours.

Most patients are happy with their results but in a small number, patients may feel that their appearance is worse than before they had the filler treatment. Generally, these issues are related to volume loss and volume depletion. It is important to discuss this at the time of consultation to determine the best course of action.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HYALURONIDASE?

It can be used to address dissatisfaction after hyaluronic acid filler treatment and potential complications including prolonged swelling, granulomas, overfilling or facial distortion, filler migration, blue discolouration, contour irregularities or serious complications such as vision loss or skin necrosis.
